Quiet Afternoon “Snack”
When a young Maori on holiday from the Chatham Islands walked into a Nelson milk bar recently he startled the staff by giving a 9s 3d order for an afternoon “snack.” When he sat down at one of the small tables the food was piled perilously high in front of him—three bowls of soup, nine slices of toast, 12 shortbread biscuits, six sandv/iches, four pieces of fruit cake, fruit salad, and ice cream, and a cup of coffee. The toast and sandwiches represented very nearly a loaf of bread.
