QUICK, PRACTICAL AID FROM N.Z. RED CROSS

Donations of over £6OO to the Trans-Jordan refugee relief organised by British Red Cross; £329 to the Ecuador Red Cross for earthquake relief; £2OO to the Phillipinines Red Cross for victims of the recent typhoon, and £25 to the fund for supplying dried milk to'undernourished children on the (‘Gold Coast were evidence of the continued activity of the New Zealand Red Cross in the field of international relief, supplied to the Dominion Executive Committee of the Society, which Mrs A. W. Winstone of Whakatane, attended last week in Wellington. • Most grateful letters and cables of thanks had come from the recipients. Thanks to the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund this assistance had been sent in a matter of hours when news of the disaster was received.

Within the Dominion, assistance had been given to overseas settlers to enable them to make a start in their new homes, and Centres concerned had all received appreciation from immigration department officials, one of whom expressed himself 1 “amazed at the speed with which the Red Cross Society went into action”, and the generosity of itc* mpinViPr^ The Director of Junior Red Cross, Miss Paterson, was congratulated by the Dominion Chairman, Mr A. E. Gibbons, on putting to practice her idea of a Junior Red Cross Camp, which has been most efficiently planned and organised for part of the summer holiday period. * It is hoped this will lead to an exchange of Juniors with Australia for camps at a later date. The Dominion Chairman thanked Miss Iris Crooke, Director of Red Cross V.A.D.’s for the strenuous tour she had taken of New Zealand giving lectures on the International Red Cross Conference in Sweden, and on conditions in Europe. There had been most enthusiastic audiences everywhere and her \ talks must have expounded general knowledge of Red Cross work. Miss Crooke intends visiting Whakatane and Tauranga again next year.
