Australia-Bay Rugby Match Put Whakatane On Map
The town had definitely been put on the map when the Australia-Bay of Plenty game was played at Whakatane during the past season said Mr R. S. Buttimore, when proposing a toast to the Whakatane Rugby Sub-Union at the United Club’s annual dinner on Saturday night. That had been mainly due to the Whakatane Union who had worked hard'to get the match, he added. During the football season the Union stopped a lot of criticism Mr Buttimore continued, but despite all. this it worked ahead and during the past year had done much to keep rugby alive. He pointed out that many of those who criticised the most rarely offered their services on the Union.
Without the co-operation of' all the clubs the Union would have found it hard to keep going, Mr D. O. Stewart, secretary of the Whakatane Union, said replying to the toast. With all the clubs working together with the Union he thought that rugby would' be kept well alive and improve as it had been doing in the past few seasons.
