Athletic And Cycle Club May Be Formed By Whakatane Body
If more than the present number of seven cyclists can be induced to join an amateur athletic and cycling club will be formed, it was decided at the annual meeting of the Whakatane Athletic Club. If this can be done it is considered that the club has a very good chance of returning to its strong pre-war strength. From the indications shown at the meeting officials consider that the club will go ahead this year and it is planned to' send athletes to outside meetings and also to the Waikato championships next-month. It was decided to hold the weekly club meetings every Saturday morning and an endeavour is to be made to encourage school children to attend these meets. Various races and field events will be held and points prizes will be awarded. An inspection is to be made of the Dofmain tomorrow morning to find the- best position for laying out a track on the ground available. Officers elected:—
Patron, Mr W. Sullivan; president, Mr Parkinson ; vice-presidents, Messrs A. White, A. H. Morpeth, D. C. Stevens; secretary, Mr J. Taylor; treasurer, Mr G. Howat; committee, Messrs B. A. Johnson, White, H. H. Armstrong, R. Dawson, Rev R. T. Dodds; club captain, Mr G. Powley; vice-captain, P. Seebeck; handicapper, Mr Johnson.
