Wages Of Servants In 16th Century
In 1537 kitchen workers received 33s a year and scullions 6s 8d a year, according to a historical survey of the English domestic servant.
At the beginning of the 17th. century, housemaids were earning up to £2. a year, and ladies’ maids and valets £4 a year. One hundred years later maids were getting £8 a year, including meals, and well-trainegU,./, personal servants could earn as;gpfi&ti as ftp a year.
In the 19th- century wages again increased, but as they rose, so did discontent. The process still continues.
