Marked Changes Are Forecast For N.Z.’s Future Population

Market changes in the distribution of population in New Zealand as among towns, regions, rural and urban areas, and the two main islands during the next 25 or 30 years are predicted by Mr G. N. Calvert, Wellington. Mr Calvert estimated that the total population of New ! Zealand would increase from 1,737,044 in 1945 to 2,506,000 in 1975. It was also predicted that within the next 30 years the North Island population would increase from 67.28 per cent of the whole to 69,05 per cent. The population of the /four main centres would probably represent 43.40 per cent of the total in 1975 as against 39.51 in 1945, and a smaller rise would also occur in the relative total population of 29 secondary centres, although a few individual centres might decline in size. On the other hand, the rural population would, probably fall from 32.48 per cent of the whole to 27.50 per cent.
