WHAKATANE PLAN FOR HARBOUR TO BE CONSIDERED

The scheme for the deep sea port at Whakatane is to be discussed, and will be considered, said Cr D. C. Butler at yesterday’s meeting of the Whakatane County Council, when reporting briefly on the meeting at Rotorua called to discuss a deep sea harbour for the Bay of Plenty. Some of the Tauranga delegates tried to infer that the Tauranga Harbour had already been selected as the port. That, however, was not so.

Cr L. W. Luxton, another delegate to the meeting, said that some of the Tauranga representatives had tried to talk the Whakatane scheme down. The Mayor of Tauranga had been hostile to it, while the chairman of the Tauranga Harbour Board had put forward figures, which were not very convincing. Cr Butler: Misleading figures. However, there had been a number of reasonable men present who had seen some possibilities. Cr A. F. McGougan said he had attended the meeting and it was obviously a “put up job,” but he felt the scheme had. been left a little late. He congratulated Mr C. H. Brebner, county engineer, and originator of the scheme on the planning and work he had put into the proposal.
