JUNIOR RECORD SMASHED IN SCHOOL STEEPLECHASE The annual steeplechase of the Whakatane District High School was held on Tuesday afternoon in fine weather. Owing to the increased roll larger fields than ever faced the starter—6s juniors and 33 seniors. The juniors ran first, and the leading runners were beginning to come in shortly after the seniors had started on their longer course. In the junior event the handicapping proved particularly good, many runhers finishing quite close together. The first six home were: M. McKay (smin), B. Dixon (4|min), D. Mayo (s|min), W. Coates (4min), J. McCormick (4£-min) and T. Dawson (s|min). Fastest time was secured by M. Morice (scr) with J. Ross and L. Alley next in order. These three boys all broke J. Chadwick’s record established in 1945. * ,

Of the seniors R. Mclntosh on the limit was never headed and finished comfortably in front of J. Mason (4£min), I. McKenzie (smin), I. Breward (2|-min), and E. Waterhouse (2min). Fastest time was secured by H. Watarawi, with E. Waterhouse,'" D. Bridges and I. Breward next in order. The fastest time was 35 seconds outside the previous record.
