Large Attendance To Garden Circle Meeting At Waimana
There was a good attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Waimana Women’s Institute gardening circle, which was held at Mrs Grant Mitchell’s home. Mrs M. King presided. Mrs Potter gave readings on growing daphne cuttings in potatoes and the growing of tree tomatoes.
Mrs Wylde spoke on Polyanthus, and stated how it is best to plant seedlings in the autumn for spring flowering. Better and larger blooms are produced. It was decided to purchase a large packet of Polyanthus seed, Mesdames Hewitt and S. Eagle to grow them. Plants are to be distributed amongst members for competition. '' Two competitions arranged by Mrs Mitchell, guessing the length of a piece of string was won by Mesdames Hewitt and King and estimating the number of beans in a bottle, by Mrs Stansbury.
Mrs Stansbury acted as competition judge. Results: — Bowl of spring flowers: Mrs M. King 1, Mrs Tankard 2, Mrs Potter 3. Best flower: Mrs S. Eagle 1, Mrs M. King 2, Mrs Hewitt 3. Best vegetable: Mrs M. King 1, Mrs Hewitt 2, Mrs Eagle 3. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Potter and S. Eagle.
