New Zealand Requires More Than 100,00 Cars

More than 100,000 new motor cars would be required to meet the normal demand for new cars, but a minimum of 30,000 cars is required to function normally and efficiently. These estimates > are furnished by the New Zealand Motor Vehicles Importers’ Association in an attractive and eloquent illustrated brochure. The case for the importation of more cars is presented to the Minister of Finance and Customs in this unusual but striking form. With an increase in population of 240,000 in the decade 1938/48, and with more than double an export income, the number of cars per head of population has declined. In the meanwhile the cost of running and maintaining old cars imposes a heavy charge upon the whole transport industry. The great majority of the cars i/a use (68 per cent.) are more than 10 years old, requiring excessive repairs with greater petrol and oil consumption and long “off-the-road” peiuods. Efficient and economical transport is a necessity to modern communal life, as also to industry and commerce. There is an unanswerable case for increased car importations.
