IDEAL CONDITIONS FOR WOMEN’S GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Bay of Plenty women’s golf championships opened at the Whakatane Golf Links on Wednesday in brilliantly ‘fine weather. 'Golfers from all over the North Island, especially the Bay of Plenty, took part and a distinctive high standard was set from the start. Conditions were ideal with the fairways slow in the morning but speeding up as they dried out. The greens were fast and were rather tricky to the visitors

The first round on Wednesday morning was the qualifying round and sorted the various players out. The first 18 were to qualify for the Bay of Plenty Championship, the second 16 for the Whakatane Handicap with the third and fourth 16’s qualifying for the first and second Whakatane Tournaments respectively.

Play continued yesterday and players again sorted themselves out. After the quarter finals in the afternoon the following players qualify to play off the semi-final of the Bay Championship this morning: Mrs J. R. Morris (Auckland) to play Mrs Crawford (Rotorua) and Mrs Tippett (Whakatane) to play Mrs Ferguson (Rotorua). The only Whakatane player to reach the semi-final, Mrs Tippett has been playing outstanding golf and is expected to go close to the final. This will be played this afternoon.

Another Whakatane player,- Mrs Thomas, reached the semi-final of the Championship Flight and will meet Mrs Robb (Gisborne) this morning. The other game in the semi-final will be between Mrs S S. Wilson (Auckland) and another Gisborne player, Miss Ballantyne. The final of this competition will also be played this afternoon. The whole championship will finish after the final rounds are played later today.
