Overhanging Trees Will Interrupt Telegraph Traffic

The job of keeping telegraphic communication open in New Zealand is a big one and requires the constant attention of the linesmen of the Telegraph Department. At Whakatane the job is just as difficult, especially in the country where there are so many trees overhanging on to lines. This is one of the greatest nuisances the Department has to cope with as overhanging trees growing near telephone lines are likely to interrupt communication. The twisting together or severing of one pair of wires on a main line may interrupt as many as 15 two-way voice conversations and 18 tym-was' telegraph channels. The Post Office has appealed for the co-operation of landowners in keeping lines free from untrimmed trees. It is pointed out that where trees are trimmed sufficient clearance should be allowed for storm conditions, as it is during storms when communications are most needed but, when the most damage is done.
