Transit Housing For Members Of Post And Telegraph Staff
The Post Office has commenced the work of building four transit housing units on a site belonging to the Department on Matatua Street opposite the wharf. The site which was previously sand dunes covered with untidy scrub has been levelled out and the work of erecting the units is now in- progress.
An ex-Army building has been secured from the Gloucester Park camp in Auckland. This building was erected in sections, and it has now been dismantled and railed to Whakatane. The building will house four transit units, each with two bedrooms, and all the usual conveniences, except that only two washhouses are available for the four units.
The building will be nicely painted and finished and the section fenced off. It should largely improve the appearance of the area as well as help to provide much-needed accommodation for men of the Post Office staff.
Two new Supervisors have been appointed to the staff, one to replace Mr Riddell, who retired earlier this year and the second one to help with the large increase in the Post Office work which has arisen from the rapid growth of the district and in the telephone system. The new flats will not entirely meet the Post Office housing position as seven members of the staff are at present unsuitably housed.
