Streams Unsuitable For Town Supply
Two other possible alternative water supplies for Whakatane outside the borough were investigated by the council but in both cases costs, and in one place insufficient water, made them impracticable, a public meeting was told by the Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, last week. It was thought at one time that water could be obtained from the old hydro station at Onepu, but piping costs ruled that out from the start.
Then further investigation was carried out on the Waiohou Stream flowing through the White Pine Bush area but because of piping costs and insufficient water, during part of the summer period it had to be turned down. also. In both cases engineering advice was obtained.
