TRUCK DRIVER IS INJURED BY 36 GALLON BEER KEG

When a 36 gallon beer keg he was unloading at Whakatane at about 3.30 p.m. on Wednesday landed on his right hand, a young Railway Road Services truck driver, Angus Mac Diarmid, single, Whakatane, was so badly injured that he had to be admitted to the Whakatane hospital for treatment. His condition is now reported to be satisfactory. Mr Mac Diarmid was helping to unload a supply of beer for the Commercial Hotel. He had hold of the bottom of the keg about the steel band when it was moved off the truck. The bottom of the keg jammed against another standing nearby and cut across his fingers and lifted most of the skin off the hand.

He was attended at the hotel by Mr P. Simons, who was assisting him, and the hotel licensee, Mr N. McG. Bremner, before being taken to the hospital. It was Mr MacDiairmid’s first day at work with the Road Services.
