LARGE RANGE OF COSTUMES AT GALATEA BALL

The Whirinaki Hall at Murupara was the scene of a very colourful and entertaining display on Friday night when the Galatea School Committee presented a children’s Fancy Dress Concert by the Galatea school children. The hall was filled to capacity and the range of costumes was remarkable.

Songs, dances, games, etc., were the order of the evening and the children, trained by Mrs Taylor and Mr Lane, were “on their toes” for every item. Mrs McGill of Galatea and Mrs Alexander of Murupara ‘ acted as judges for the evening and both agreed on the difficulty of selecting the prize winners. It proved, so close in many cases that money kindly donated by Mrs Creamer and the judges themselves was awarded to the runners-up.

Best Couple: Mickey and Minnie Mouse 1, The Bride and Groom 2. Special prizes were awarded to: The Rainbow, The Nigger Ministrel, The Carnation and the Snowdrop. Pre-School Children A section was held for the preschool children and they looked very sweet in their fancy dress, ages ranging from about 18 months to 4 years. These were:—Robin Woller, Cupid; Keith Woller, Strong Man; Warren Jansen, Little Boy Blue; Malcolm Jansen, Imp; Roger Webb, Sultan; Jimmy Thatcher, Cowboy; Helen ford, Fairy; Janice Gear, Fairy; Anne Nettleton, Period Lady; John Nettleton; Garth Rowlands, All Black; Bruce Macdonald, Baggy Breeches; Bryce Heard, Sailor; Mervyn Paton, Old Fashioned Gentleman; Ray Neville, Page Boy; Valerie Allen, Birthday Cake; Ray win Nicholson, Bride.

Pi'ize winners wetre: — Best Pre-School Boy: The All Black 1, The Sultan 2. Best Pre-School Girl: The Fairy 1, The Birthday Cake 2. Special prizes were awarded to: Cupid, Little Boy Blue and the Fairy (Helen Crawford). Murupara Section

Another section was held for the following Muirupara school children who attended in fancy dress:— Anne Rowlands, Paper Lolly; Joan Willbond, Scotch Girl; Betty Cawte, Pierrette; Alan Hill, Invalid; Mary Gibbs, Nurse; Rita Gibbs, Rooster; Pam Gibbs, Sunflower; Bobby Gibbs, Brown Paper Parcel; Christine Newton, Harem Girl. The winners of this section were: Best Girl: Harem Girl. Best Boy: The Invalid.

Juniors: Paper Lolly 1, Pierrette 2. , Mr Jansen and Mr Crawford had very kindly donated cash prizes for the best home-made costumes and these w r ere won by:— Best Home-made Girl’s Costume: Crinoline Lady 1, Polish Dancer 2. Best Home-made Boy’s Costume: Red Indian (John Lane) 1, Chinese Boy 2. Mrs Taylor acted as judge for the marching and donated the cash prizes for this also. Amongst the winners were:— Phyllis Vegar, Allen Jansen, lan Judd, Helen Caie and Leslie Ramshaw. Ten shillings was given to the School Committee by Valarie Crawford (“‘Won’t you buy my pretty flowers”) from the sale of her basket of flowers whilst Mr and Mrs Rewi donated 15s.

A very tempting supper brought to a close an evening which everyone had thoroughly enjoyed.
