Stag Scatters Working Bee At Thornton
There’s a lot in this Boy Scout business of being prepared. For instance, imagine the lamentation when a 7-pointer stag scattered a working bee at the Rangitaiki Defence Rifle Club’s Thornton range on Sunday and not one of the riflemen had a rifle with him. All was going brightly with the working bee when, without any gay “what-ho’s” to herald his presence, the stag dashed amongst them tossing a wicked set of antlers in a way that suggested a rifle might have betn a good thing to have in the hip pocket or wherever a rifleman keeps it However, the visitor scampered off down the range to the road and through Mr Willie Moore’s property towards the river. By this time, some of the startled riflemen were pounding after him bent on mortal combat. Whitebaiters on the river bank scattered, and the stag swam the river and headed for the golf links, where the pursuers gave it best.
