SHEEP ON CEMETERY

Sir, —Would you inform us if we have no say in the stocking of cemetery. We own a small plot—or thought we did—and the little plot is very dear and sacred to us. For seven years we have never failed to put fresh flowers and water on it at least once a week; very often twice a week. Now we learn through your paper that sheep are to be let loose on the cemetery. We do not like the idea, of taking flowers to feed sheep. , Surely the councillors are not as callous as they make out they are. Yours etc., \ (Mrs) R. L. JENSEN. Edgecumbe, August 11. This letter was referred to the Town whose explanation of the position * appears on . page 5. Editor.

Sir,— Through your valuable paper I learn that the councillors have decided to go in for sheep. This is to my thinking a great idea as it will help to increase production and we will be able to send more mutton to England. Also it will be something for the councillors to do in their spare time, such as shifting sheep from one cemetery to the other or even grazing them in the neglected streets of Whakatane. There are some, you know. This sheep in the cemetery has one drawback. Just imagine our Town Fathers coming home in the night or early hours some morning arm in arm and seeing hundreds of bright, red eyes staring at them through cemetery gates. Even one sheep might say bah! What reaction will this-have on our Town Fathers. Methinks they will take to their heels.

Yours etc., A PLOT OWNER,
