ELECTRICITY
Sir,—ln March 1929 American Grand Electric had bought 60 per cent of British Grand Electric. In April 1929 the American Power and Light Corporation bought the entire common stock of the Greater London County Trust, controlling the seven chief power companies of Britain and supplied power on a monopoly basis to 95 cities in England and Scotland. All these big schemes projected -and assented to by a Socialist Government are a chain of economic servitude round the necks of the present and future generations and only a proposition for the international financier, making us
dependent for the necessities of life to foreign finance. This is what is called sound finance or efficiency! Whereas the bigger the scheme the less efficient it is to the people. / Why continue this farce by allowing international finance to take control of our heritage? Finally I would ask: how many local generating plants have been scrapped throughout New Zealand during State control of electricity? And does the State Hydro Electric Department publish an annual balance sheet? If so, can a copy be supplied? If not, why not? Yours etc., W. BRADSHAW. . We understand that annual statements of State Hydro Electric Department activities are presented to Parliament and we suggest you ask the district M.P. to get you the figures you want. Editor.
