APPRECIATION OF HOSPITALITY OF LOCAL LEGION

Appreciation of Whakatane’s hospitality during the Dominion Conference of the Legion of Frontiersmen is expressed in the following letter from Lt. A. H. Delaney, Adjutant of D Squadron, Hamilton, to Lt. E. R. Hunt, Adjutant Y Squadron, Whakatane: “I am directed by Capt. K. P. Blair, staff and members of “D” Squadron Hamilton, to express appreciation to Capt. R. S. Whittaker, staff and members of “Y” Squadron for the reception and accbmmodation arrangements accorded our delegates and our members who attended the 1949 Conference at Whakatane!

“It is appreciated that considerable staff work was involved in arranging for conference and it’s happy conclusion along with the consideration shown to visiting Frontiersmen,' their wives and friends all proclaim the 1949 conference a great success. “We as members of the Legion of Frontiersmen organisation,, were particularly grateful for the editorial leader in the Whakatane daily paper issued prior to the commencement of the conference. This leader is being typed and a copy made available to each of our members. “We were also interested in reading your contribution in the April issue of “The Frontiersman.” Reference is made to the question:—■ “What has the Legion to offer” and goes on to say that the best answer to this enquiry is: “Simply nothing but sacrifice.”

“Capt. Blair (Pioneer) and Cpl. E. Lowe, our Official Delegates and other members who attended ' the conference, wish me to impress on “Y” Squadron comrades that your many sacrifices before and during the conference were not in vain because they retain pleasant memories of desirable contacts and this in turn has further cemented the ideals which draw together men who are proud to wear the Legion uniform.” We are flattered by the reference to the “Whakatane daily paper” and trust the words might prove a prophesy soon to be vindicated. Incidentally, the Legion has sent copies of the Beacon containing the conference reports to Africa, Canada, Australia and British Columbia.
