R.S.A. MOVE TO GET ELECTORS TO POLLING BOOTHS

Mr D. S. Wilson (President) presided over an emergency meeting of the Whakatane R.S.A. Executive held to discuss the Referendum on Compulsory Military Training. After members of both World Wars had stressed the need and urgency for compulsory military training, it was unanimously decided that the fullest support for the issue be given by the Association. The importance for the need j for the largest possible vote was emphasised and members covering all districts of the Whakatane County were appointed to arrange cars and transport for those unable to attend a polling booth. Providing permission could be obtained it was decided to arrange speakers at half time at all. theatres in the district.

At this stage, the meeting was attended by representatives of the Labour Party, National Party, Borough Council, County Council, Women’s Section R.S.A., Home Servicemen’s Association, Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club. Mr Wilson welcomed these representatives and explained the objects of the meeting and advised the actions recommended.

All representatives expressed the fullest support of their respective organisations for compulsory military training and after some discussion, it was decided to appoint a central committee comprising three members of the R.S.A. and one member of each organisation represented. At a further meeting of the central committee it was announced that, for the convenience of electors, a phone now had been allocated (No. 281) and contact with this number will arrange transport for any unable to attend a polling booth within the Borough. County phone numbers will be announced later.
