Military Service & “National Service”

Opponents—chiefly Communists—of compulsory military training are deliberately misnaming the issue of the referendum, says a Government statement. They continue to describe it as -“compulsory national service” which, they say, means that everyone who has reached the age of 18 becomes liable for service to the State; that it is only a step from military training to labour service or manpower direction. They also allege that women will be manpowered. Such statements are deliberate fabrications. The issue of the referendum is “compulsory military training” on a plan which has been published. The plan refers to men who reach the age of 18 years and to them only.
