QUARRY WANTED The Council is to apply to the Whakatane Harbour Board for use of a quarry at Commerce Street, Whakatane, as a timber yard. 930 DRIVERS’ LICENCES A total of 990 drivers’ licences have been issued by the traffic inspector, 235 in the past month. RUATAHUNA LICENCES Mr T. L. Morrison, Overseer, Maori Affairs Department, Ruatahuna, is now to issue drivers’ licences and register dogs in the Ruatahuna district. ROAD WIDENED Widening work on the Te TekoGalatea road is now in progress near the approach to the Waiohau School bridge. This portion of the road was damaged considerably during the last flood. SAFE FOR ORDINARY TRAFFIC ? The Works Department has notified the Whakatane County Council that the Edgecumbe bridge should be made safe for ordinary traffic and that the Department will pay threequarters of the cost. FLOOD DAMAGE GRANT The claim for a flood damage grant from the Works Department has been forwarded to the head office at Wellington. So far no reply has been received. ANIMALS IMPOUNDED One bull, 23 horses and 13 cattle were impounded last month from Waimana, Opouriao, Te Teko, Awakeri and Matata. Driving, pound and sale fees collected totalled £2O 7s 6d. MANGAMATE BRIDGE The reconstruction of the Mangamate bridge at Minganui has been completed and although shortened considerably in length it has been raised several feet higher to work in with the new road formation. ROAD WANTED RE-OPENED A request for the opening of the southern end of Bank Road to its junction with the Opotiki-Whaka-tane highway has been received favourably by the Council and the County engineer, Mr C. H. Brebner, has been instructed to submit an estimate of the cost, which will be involved.

GALATEA BRIDGE RE-ERECTED The Galatea School bridge, which collapsed some time ago has been re-erected temporarily in a new position adjacent to its previous site. When repairs to the old abutment have been completed the bridge is to be reconstructed on its correct site.
