LOCAL BODIES NOT INTERESTED IN A CONFERENCE

Because other local bodies in the Eastern Bay of Plenty are not interested, the proposed conference of local.bodies suggested by the Whakatane County Council to discuss the present unsatisfactory power position is not to be held the chairman, Mr J. L. Burnett, told the monthly meeting of the Council yesterday. The Opotiki Borough and County Councils had been approached but indicated that they were not interested while the Whakatane Borough Council had replied that it was making a direct approach for an increased power allocation.

Under the circumstances, Mr Burnett said, it did not seem advisable to press for a conference. ‘I cannot understand them,” he said. “It seems remarkable to me that they don’t seem concerned.” Cr D. C. Butler: Opotiki is not concerned because they haven’t the cuts we have had. Mr Burnett said that it did not appear as if anything could be done by combined local bodies. It was then decided that the chairman and the county clerk discuss the power situation in the county with the engineer-manager of the Power Board.
