Extensive Scrub Fire Endangers Stacked Timber
Believed to have been started by two school boys in pine trees on the hill above the timber yards of Boon, Sullivan, Luke at Whakatane, a fire swept quickly through low scrub and small trees and was just halted before it reached stacked timber on Wednesday afternoon. So serious was the threat of the outbreak at one stage that the Whakatane Fire Brigade was called at about 4.15 p.m. and with the aid of beaters managed to keep it away from the yard. However, the fire was not extinguished and it continued burning up the hill and towards dark was blazing fiercely. The deep orange glow from/the flames could be seen far out on the Rangitaiki Plains and it began to endanger a large petrol sign behind the premises of Brabant Bros. By 7 o’clock Brabant Bros, employees managed to put the blaze out.
Although it was burning for some time no serious damage is reported to have been done by the fire.
