Renowned Ayrshire Sire Dies Two Weeks Before Sale
The third annual sale at the Lan-ark-Ayrshire stud conducted by Wright, Stephenson and Co. Ltd., at Whitford on Tuesday, was attended by a representative bench of dairy buyers. Both males and females met a ready demand, the average for the catalogue of 38 head including yearling heifers being 37-2 guineas. A feature of the last two catalogues has been the offering of direct sons of the renowned breeding sire, Netherton Mahmoud (Imp). Mahmoud died a fortnight before the sale, so that the next crop of calves will be the only remaining opportunity to purchase direct progeny of Mahmoud from his own. stud.
This limitation of direct progeny was reflected in the keenness of dairymen to secure his yearling sons; the top realisation being 145 guineas for Lanark-Ayrshire Maadi A.A. secured by Mr N. Taylor, Pakaranga. Ihanark-Ayrshire Tunisia another son was secured by Mr D. J. Howard, Maungaturoto for 120 guineas. Lanark-Ayrshire Emily, the top priced 2 year old heifer, went to Mr H. S. Garton, of Peria, Kaitaia, at 56. guineas, and the next at 50 guineas, was secured by Mr F. B. Davies Tuakau.
Individual averages were:—Four cows '44gns, 4 2 year old in-calf heifers 42|gns, 18 yearling heifers 24igns,. 12 yearling bulls 53|-gns.
