PRICE RECORDS SET BY PUKETUTU ISLAND AYRSHIRES
To one of the largest attendances at an auction this season the Puketutu Island Ayrshire stud freely sold an outstanding catalogue of yearling bulls, yearling two-year heifers and young cows last 'week. Eighteen of the yearling bulls and three yearling heifers offered were by the Scottish importation Eglinton Main’s Bright Light, the remainder of the offering comprising 12 2 year old in-calf heifers, 1 senior herd sire and 4 cows. Keen competition was experienced throughout and purchased lots were destined for studs throughout the Dominion. To light grazing country such as Puketutu Island, the abnormal season has brought an unprecedented full milking period growth thus enabling the Puketutu females to show their real worth and this was reflected in the readiness of buyers to secure progeny bred to bloodlines, which have proven their butterfat qualifications this season.
The top price of 300 guineas was paid for a yearling son of Bright Light, Puketutu Bright Glow by Mr A. Weir, Invercargill. The senior herd sire, Maxwelton Majesty, was secured by his breeder, Mr A. C. Bailey, Wharepoa, at 165 guineas. Puketutu Bright Fancy, a yearling daughter of Eglinton Main’s Bright Light, was secured by Mr M. Moffitt, Manawatu, at 100 guineas. '
Messrs Walter McGill and Sons, Te Awamutu, for their Ngahape Stud purchased Puketutu Arawa an in-calf 2 year daughter of Maxwelton Real Fame for 120 guineas. The catalogue of 39 head averaged a record price in New Zealand for the breed, 91.2 guineas, and individual averages were:— Four cows 54gns, 12 2 year inicalf heifers 54|gns, 3 yearling heifers 68gns, 1 Herd Sire 165gns, 19 yearling bulls 122gns. The sale was conducted by Wright Stephenson and Co. Ltd.
