SCOUT HALL SCHEME TO BE PUSHED AHEAD

One of the main points of interest at the annual meeting of the Whakatane Scout Committee on Wednesday evening, was the outline of the Scout Hail proposal by Commissioner C. Kingsley-Smith who gave a detailed account of the activities to date and urged an early commencement with the project. The movement, he said, had already acquired a section, collected over £2OO in cash and had tentative plans drawn up for consideration. The Hall Committee, of which he was chairman, had combined with the Guide movement with a view to jointly owning and controlling the proposed building, and already there had been many offers of help. It was now considered opportune to re-approach the Building Controller, seeking a permit to build a hall 60 x 30ft. in McGarvey’s Road. With the Government subsidy available for such projects, the speaker anticipated that at least half the target sum of £IOOO would be realised.

“It is absolutely essential for the Scouts and Cubs to have a hall of their own if they are to maintain their' present strength and progress,” said the Commissioner, who went on to point out that new recruits were enrolling at almost every parade, and that Scout equipment and gear was at present depreciating in storage in various parts of the Borough. The meeting warmly endorsed the suggestion that the projected hall scheme should be pushed forward with the utmost vigour. Officers Elected The following officers were elected— a

Patron, Mr B. S. Barry; president, Rev. J. C. J. Wilson; vice-presidents, Messrs Rex Morpeth, F. Carpenter, and H. G. Warren; secretary and treasurer, Mrs C.
