Horse Strikes Car At Gallop; Rider Thrown Over Hood

A horse was killed instantly and its rideb escaped death by a miracle when it galloped headlong into the front of a car in Bridge street about 6.30 Friday evening.

The car, driven towards town by Mr Basil Jones, of Edgecumbe, was just passing a stationary bus near the service station when the horse ridden by Mr Thomas Kingi, of Paroa, galloped head-on into the radiator, splitting its head open and killing itself instantly. Mr Kingi was thrown over the top of the car to land on the grass verge of the road.

Though he was still in hospital this morning, it is understood Mr Kingi was not seriously hurt, and his condition is reported as “satisfactory.” Though the windscreen of the car was shattered, none of the occupants was hurt. Damage to the forepart of the coachwork, radiator grille and lamps was extensive.
