Transport Service Fills Long Felt Need At Whakatane
Formed into a company last year and expanding steadily ever since, the Ohope Transport Company has brought to Whakatane and the surrounding district a transport ser L ' vice that had never been provided here before. Commencing first on the Ohope-Whakatane run it now serves all of the Whakatane Borough out as far as Paroa and also the Wainui £nd Cheddar Valleys. Although not comparable with other municipal transport services, the company is filling the role. Workers’ buses between Ohope and the town and also in the borough are beginning to be accepted. Morning and evening they are used by many people and at one time a luncheon service was commenced but the number of people making use of it did not make it economical to continue.
Now the company has taken over the Edgecumbe-Te Teko-Whakatane service and has plans for extension here. It will serve Edgecumbe, Te Teko, Otakiri and extends to Kawarau and Matahina. The services will Use the routes via Edgecumbe and the Awakeri Springs Road. Yesterday the Beacon was informed that these services are to be extended and improved wherever possible with attention being paid to the timetables. New vehicles are to be purchased as soon as the finance is available.
