“EMERGENCY” GAS RULES HAVE STRICT LIMITS

In spite of the fact that the regulations are quite clear on the point, there still appears .to be some confusion locally as to the circumstances in which motorists can draw petrol from emergency stations at week-ends and on public holidays. At the last meeting of the Whakatane branch of the N.Z. Retail Motor Trade Association. it was mentioned that there seemed to be an impression abroad that an emergency station could issue petrol to anyone who had a coupon or a license without more ado.

Discussing the point afterwards, a spokesman of the Association made it clear that such : is not the case. .., y . .

He pointed out that week-end petrol supplies from emergency sta-, tions can be obtained only in cases of genuine emergency, (1) By motorists who have already travelled 100 miles on the day of supply or the day before, (2) For an urgent business trip of over 100 miles, or (3) In the case of death or serious illness in the motorist’s family. Moreover, every motorist obtaining such a. supply must sign an. emergency register, which embodies . a declaration that the facts given are correct. A false declaration involves liability to - substantial penalty.
