Waimana-Nukuhou Garden Circle

The June meeting of the Wai-mana-Nukuhou W.I. gardening circle was held at Mrs M. King’s home, and there was cpiite a good attendance. Mrs King presided and, in the absence of the secretary (Mrs Potter) Mrs Wylde capably filled that position.

Mrs Hewitt read interesting papers on carnation and gladioli cultivation, and the planting of roses. Mrs J. Mitchell spoke , of the beau-tifully-kept lawns and . gardens fringing the Avon River, Christchurch.

A competition, jumbled flower names, arranged by Mrs N. Eagle, was won by Mrs Hewitt with Mrs Wylde and Mrs Woolfield second, equal. > Estimating the number of maize seeds in a bottle was won by Mrs J. Mitchell, with Mrs Wylde second.

The day’s competitions were judged by Mrs Woolfield Snr. and Mrs D. Woolfield.

Best flower: Mrs Hewitt 1, Mrs S. Eagle 2, Mrs J. Mitchell 3. Best vegetable: Mrs J. Mitchell 1, Mrs Hewitt 2, Mrs Whiteman 3. Decorated egg cup: Mrs M. King 1, Mrs J. Mitchell 2, Mrs Wylde 3. A lovely lot of gladioli bulbs and Canna lilies were distributed to members by Mrs Mitchell, and Mrs N. Eagle gave Regal lily seeds to members.

The July meeting is to be held at Mrs G. Mitchell’s home and the competition will be novel winter decoration.
