FINE SPORT AT OPOURIAO HUNT ON SATURDAY

Opouriao was the scene of the fourth meet of the Rangitaiki Ward Opotiki Hunt Club held under ideal weather conditions last Saturday.

Although the going was a little holding on the flat country and the river bed, the conditions were perfect but the hares few. Only' one kill resulted, but the hounds gave tongue twice. About 50 followers made up the field and the large number of cars following along the road showed that non-members were taking a keen interest. Morning tea was served at Mrs A. ,R. Torrie’s residence, assisted by Mrs Hill and Miss Armstrong. After travelling over some interesting jumps on Torrie’s-property the hounds gave tongue to k hare which led the hunt out onto the road and into Yeoman’s ‘property. Unfortunately this country had not been railed and the huntsman lost the hounds which caused a long delay and a considerable amount of galloping on .the roads. No sooner had the hounds been lifted and brought under control than a second hare was viewed giving the hounds a short run up the road into T. Wanton’s farm Where it was killed. ? ..’6 - ■

No other hares were sighted but the members had plenty of jumping over Rawson’s Estate, L. Richardson’s, Soutar’s, Tibbett’s and Dunstan’s. A few minor spills occurred, but without serious injury. The Hunt returned to Torrie’s for afternoon tea, and the Ward Master, Mr G. Fogerty, expressed his appreciation on behalf of the Hunt Club, for the generosity of the farmers in allowing the' Hunt to pass over their farms and also a warm welcome to the visitors. Three hearty cheers were given to the women responsible for the refreshments and for the farmers.
