COUNCIL GRANTED £25,000 LOAN FOR NEW WATERWORKS

With the granting of a waterworks loan of £25,000 by the Loans Board preliminary preparations such as a poll of ratepayers to have it sanctioned and the immediate preparation of plans are to be proceeded with by the Whakatane Borough Council it was decided at the monthly meeting this week. The whole question is to be placed before ratepayers by the Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, at a public meeting.

The full details for which the loan is being granted have been received by the Council and include the construction of a reservoir, intake and low lift pumping station, flocculation plant, purchase and installation of a rising main, pipes, motors, pumps including spares and general equipment and engineering fees and land purchase. The term of the loan is for 30 years at an interest rate of 3£ per cent repayable by annual instalments of principal and interest. The Loans Board granted the loan on the condition that tenders were not let or any work commenced until the final plans and specifications have been approved by the Works and Health Departments. It is expected to be sometime yet before work will finally get under way.
