CONSCRIPTION
Sir, —Though there has been no comment here, the conscription question still seeihs to be a live topic elsewhere. Mr Fraser has been criticised by some for acceding to the Labour Conference request for a referendum, but I consider he did the right thing. Perhaps it might have been better had he restricted the voting to those likely to be directly affected, i.e., those in the age groups to be conscripted and parents and wives of those groups. Personally, I consider military training in peace-time a waste of time and,, contrary to a large body of opinion, definitely not a good influence on the conscripts. To herd a lot of young men into camps, breaking into their trade training and taking them out of industries that' are all. short of labcur merely to chase them around the “bull ring” in a series of musclebinding, stultifying and pointless movements strikes me as rather futile preparation for the type of war we can expect if we are ever fools enough to let our “statesmen” drag us into another one. ‘ Yours etc., PAX VOBISCUM.
