A CANKEROUS GROWTH

Sir, —If, as in purely political questions, the respective “parties” in power determine their attitude, r.ot by considerations of expediency, but by their hostility for the time being to one party or the other, so they do to a far greater extent in questions of economic policy; and economics are weighed with care in the party balance, with the exception of the centre which is “most practical” as coming from New York.

Every party has its own speciality in its own economic policy to which economic questions are subordinated to the centre. This is part and parcel of party dogma. The New Zealand party man gets so wrapped up in the views of his party on economic questions, that soon, by auto-suggestion, he comes to consider these views as bound up with his trade interests and his own livelihood and so far as economic matters are concerned carries on party warfare with a vigour that can only be inspired by pure selfishness. But as the parties develop more and more, so will the frustration of

the people increase. A distinction must be made between party rule dominating the people, and a nations (or private) ownership. The two do not coincide. So the frustration of the people leaves the door open to Communism. Yours etc., W. BRADSHAW.
