PRIMARY SCHOOLS’ SPORTS
Sir, —This year the Whakatane Primary Schools’ Sports Association is making a determined effort to improve Rugby football in the district by organising and participating in various tournaments. Already, inter-school games are being played and on Wednesday, June 29 a large-scale seven-a-side tournament will be held at Whakatane in conjunction with a district basketball tournament. Following this on July 6 an inter-zone representative match will be held to assist the selectors—Messrs Holyoake (Ruatoki), Oliver (Taneatua) and Eryers (Whakatane) decide on the district representative team. During the first week of the August school holidays the representatives of Whakatane Schools will participate in the Bay of Plenty Provincial Tournament for the Tai Mitchell Shield which is at present held by Rotorua. This shield was presented by Mr Tai Mitchell several years ago and annual tournaments are held in various centres. The competition is open to primary school teams from any Rugby Union district in the Bay of Plenty. It is well recognised that the primary schools are the nursery of Rugby football and we consider it a privilege that Whakatane is to be the centre this year for the Tai Mitchell Shield competition. Teams from various parts of the Bay of Plenty are to be billeted locally while competing here. Already a number of residents have most kindly offered* billets for the boys who will be visiting Whakatane but many others are needed. We would be grateful if those people who could provide accommodation would contact the Whakatane or Taneatua Schools as soon as possible. Apart from the necessity of providing billets an undertaking such as this entails considerable expense, for entertainment and transport must be provided. For the purpose of setting up a fund to enable us to conduct this tournament successfully and to benefit all sport in the primary schools in and around Whakatane we are appealing to the generosity of and of generosity of individuals and of donations to this Association.
Donations may be sent to the .undersigned.
Yours etc., J. N. ROLFE, Hon. Sec
