Both Pakeha And Maori Births Show Decided Increase
Continuing the trend of post-war-years, European births in New Zealand in 1947-48, for which statistics have been released, reached a record total of 43,983, a rate of 25.79 a thousand of the population. The rate of increase, however, was slightly lower than that in the preceding year.
Maori births were at almost double the rate, 45.49 a thousand, and totalled 4,880. This was* much lower than the previous year, when Maori births were 6.008, at 58.09 a thousand. The death rate was lowest since ,1940 at 9.20 a thousand, and the increase of population was 41,045, or 2.29 per cent. The European increase was 37,741, 75 per cent of which was natural increase.
Index figures shown in a table in the report of the Census and Statistics Department reveal a growing population. Gross reproduction index figures for 1947-48 were higher than in 1946-47 at 1.684, compared with 1.585 for the European population. The index figure of 1, assuming a constant death rate, indicates a stationary population.
