Whakatane's Biggest Industry Supports The Winter Show

On Wednesday afternoon, June 22, the Winter Show will be declared open by W.- Sullivan, Esq. M.P. In the centre of the main building will be a court manned by a member of the staff of the Whakatane Board Mills Limited. This court will give visitors some idea of the vastness of this New Zealand enterprise, and the many uses the cardboard product is put to. The directors are offering to the younger generation of this district a great opportunity ultimately to man the technical, engineering, and chemical branches of the company, and the schoolboy who desires to put his feet on the first rung of the ladder of success should see this exhibit. When his school days are over the directors will welcome any ambitious lad to the staff, and he will be taught the many intricate and interesting processes between the pine tree and the carton that protects a breakfast food or some other New Zealand manufactured essential.

This great modern factory is part of the financial lifeblood of ,this community and, if it died, many a Whakatane business would die with it. This company is supporting the Winter Show by purchasing space to exhibit some portion of its many manufacturing activities, and it is the hope of the Show Executive that this example will be followed. Many years ago, when Pinus Insignis trees were planted on the poor pumice lands, no man could forsee that those trees would some day bring untold wealth to this coast and, unlike our gold mines; wealth that can never become exhausted.

The Whakatane Board Mills cushion the effects of temporary unemployment, and while the walls of the mill stand, no energetic man need starve. The Winter Show Executive appreciates the efforts of the company to help to make the Show an outstanding success, and on June 22, 23, 24 and 25 the hopes that thousands of interested visitors will view this court. A ring day or night on phone 169 A will bring any required information and show schedules will be sent to any address. — P.B.A.
