NEW HIGHLAND PIPE BAND FOR WHAKATANE
At a recent meeting convened for the purpose, it was_unanimously decided to form a Highland Pipe Band in the Whakatane district, the name of the Band to be “The Whakatane St. Andrews Highland Pipe Band.”
Considerable enthusiasm was shown by those present, and donations to the value of nearly £IOO have been received already. This is a good start, but as it will take approximately £SOO to equip the Band with instruments and uniforms the question of raising finance was fully discussed and committees were formed for that purpose.
The Band, which already comprises 18 playing members, has had some practices and is already on its way towards becoming a playing Band and the people of Whakatane can lock forward to hearing it at some future' date. Officers elected were: President, Mr D. Anderson; secretary, Mr H. L. Drube; pipe major, Mr S. McMillan; drum major, Mr G. Paterson; pipe sergeant, Mr D. McKenzie; drum sergeant, Mr J. Anderson; executive committee, Messrs D. Anderson, G. Middlemas, S. McMillan, G. Paterson, D. McKenzie, J. Anderson, H. L. Drube and Mrs D. Anderson. Women’s and men’s committees were also formed. It was decided to incorporate with the South Auckland Pipe Band Association in order to allow the Band to enter competitions. Two offers of rooms for practice were received with appreciation and it was left to the Pipe Major to go into the matter with the people concerned.
