SHIPS UNABLE TO WORK BAR WAIT OFF WHAKATANE
Because of heavy seSs running over the bar, two motor vessels of the Northern Steamship Company were unable to enter the Whakatane Harbour during the past five days and had to shelter under Whale Island waiting for the weather to clear. However, yesterday with stores running low both vessels headed for Tauranga to restore and wait until the> sea calmed down. The Toa arrived off Whakatane on Wednesday with a cargo of manure but the bar was not workable. The ship then made for Whale Island and came over at every tide to inspect the bar. On Friday she was joined by the Clansman with general cargo but the seas showed no signs of dropping and on Saturday appeared to be getting worse. During Saturday the masters were in touch with Captain G. Carey, harbourmaster at Whakatane, and informed him they would be leaving foy Tauranga on Sunday remaining until the weather cleared. They berthed at Tauranga yesterday afternoon.
Both ships are expected back sometime this week to unload their cargo.
