Camping Party Marooned

Taken out from Whakatane on Tuesday to Whale Island, a camping party was marooned there during the week-end because of heavy seas which .made the Whakatane bar unworkable. They were still on the island this morning although the harbourmaster, Captain G. Carey, was going to attempt to reach the island sometime today. Consisting of five Waimana men, Messrs B. L. Burnett, C. Bell, A. Bettleheim and D. Bell, the party was taken out by the Whakatane Harbour Board launch and intended to return on Friday. Heavy seas whipped up Thursday and the bar was not workable on Friday. The men had food for five days.
