Duke’s Mother Lives As A Nun

The Duke of Edinburgh’s mother, Princess Andrew of Greece, is living the life of a nun on the Aegean island of Tinos, writes the Athens correspondent in the Overseas Daily Mail. The Princess lives in three rooms of an old two-storeyed house

with a 45-year-old nun, Sophie Alberti, as her companion. She does all her own housekeeping, including the washing and cooking. Twice a day, in the long grey gown of a nun, Princess Andrew goes to the Greek Orthodox Church nearby. She intends to visit England next summer to see her son and grandson.

Princess Andrew came to London for her son’s wedding, but she was not at the christening of Prince Charles—her 15th grandchild.

The Princess is 63. Her husband died in 1944.
