Former Army Padre Ob Maori Battalion

A former Maori Battalion padre, the Rev. W. Huata, was the speaker at the weekly Rotary Club luncheon in Hastings recently. Mr Huata, himself a Rotarian, spoke on his experiences with the Maori Battalion overseas.

The speaker explained his reasons for being opposed to members of the battalion marrying overseas. He said that both the officer commanding and himself had come to the conclusion that they had a responsibility to return the men to their families.

Later they had been congratulated in their decision by General Freyberg. This stand had made them somewhat unpopular, but before the ship reached New Zealand many of the men had come to him and had offered the hand of friendship.
