Biscuits Too: Whakatane Always Short First?
“Yes, we are short of biscuits, too,” said a grocer when inquiries were made by the Beacon of the different shortages which now exist at Whakatane. “If there is going to be a shortage anywhere it will be at Whakatane,” this grocer added. “Months before any other place we are usually short of different commodities. Why I don’t know.” However, the position did not apply to Whakatane alone, this retailer amended. Biscuits, matches and. some tinned fruits were very scarce all over the country: Further inquiries as to the reason for the biscuit shortage revealed that there was little butter and sugar available for baking. Cream crackers appeared to be the only type of any quantity on the market.
