LOCAL HOSPITAL TO BE A. GRADE TRAINING SCHOOL
Proposals to bring the Whakatane Hospital up to an A grade training school were discussed and supported at the monthly meeting of the Bay of Plenty Hospital Board yesterday. Certain requirements would be needed and it was finally decided that the board would go ahead and try to provide the necessary qualifications. One of the main requirements was to open the children’s ward, said the chairman, Mr J. Mullins. The hospital was also required to provide a projector, anatomical model of the torso and £2O worth of books for a library, annually. Extra staff was needed, including an assistant matron and a tutor sister. These had already been appointed.. Asked to comment on the suggestion, the medical superintendent, Dr E. T. Dawson, said he thought it could be done. To open the children’s ward would need re-arrang-ing the present staff, but extra nurses were coming to the hospital, and that would assist the position considerably. Changes would be needed to toilet facilities and suitable beds for children would be required, the matron, Miss K. Miller, added. However until this could be done the hospital could carry on.
After further discussion it was decided to go ahead with a view to raising the status; of the hospital to an A grade training school and to advise the Nurses’ and Midwives’ Board, Wellington, accordingly. '
