Expectant Mothers' Trek Thorugh Flood
The bridge that was made unuseable at Taneatua by heavy rain early this week inconvenienced quite a number of people. To six women in the Opouriao Valley, almost ready to enter the maternity annexe of the Whakatane hospital, it brought some anxious moments. Even floods and heavy rain will not delay the arrival of man at his youngest into the world and, not prepared to take the chance of spending a night cut off from the medical world, the six women decided to travel to the Whakatane hospital by hook or by crook. Several people in the district cooperated before the expectant mothers finally got under way. The first leg of the journey was done in a trailer hauled by a tractor. Then there was a change over to a boat. From there the party changed again to a taxi and it was only a few minutes later when they were at the hospital.
