Whakatane Council Does Not Support Hamilton Province
A letter from the Hamilton City Council asking support to establish a new province at South Auckland was discussed by the Whakatane Borough Council on Monday night. There was little support from councillors who could not see any advantage to Whakatane in the suggestion.
The Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, said he could not see any merit in the suggestion. In any case new provinces were a thing of the pakt and were not necessary today.
Although there was something in dividing the Auckland province because of the huge population, Cr W. Sullivan considered that the proposal really was to establish a South Auckland province with Hamilton as the capital.
After further discussion no action was taken, the letter being received.
