HEAVY RAIN WILL SPREAD DUCKS IN VERY WIDE AREA
That the coming shooting season When it opens tomorrow should be a particularly good one for grey duck was forecast by Mr K. E. Francis, Government Ranger at Whakatane, to the Beacon yesterday. Quail were also plentiful and from present indications he thought there were more about now than had been the case for many years. The recent heavy rains, Mr Francis continued, and the consequent flooding was going to have the affect of distributing duck over a wider area. As a result the sport of shooters who had already established selected possies was going to be much more difficult.
The prospects for pheasants too are reasonably good. Last year several ducks, grey and mallard, were banded and liberated by the Wild Life Service of the Department of Internal Affairs, Mr Francis said. Should any of these birds be shot in the district sportsmen are being asked to send the bands, together with the date and place where the bird was shot, to him, Douglas Street, Whakatane. The department wanted these figures to carry on the experiments it was at present engaged on.
