Otakiri W.I. Has Nineteenth Birthday

A fine display of autumn foliage and flowers was on show at the May meeting of the Otakiri Women’s Institute held recently in the Otakiri Hall, the occasion being the 19th birthday. Mrs J. Carr presided, and welcomed visitors from other Institutes, and Women’s Divisions.

The afternoon’s entertainment opened with a musical competition, followed by the Otakiri Choir, with two songs, two humorous sketches, a wall competition, and a solo by Miss Jill Lockyer. A game, “Passing the Ring” played by two teams, caused much amusement. A parade of decorated hats, made from an article of general use, was very artistically displayed, winners being Mrs D. Campbell first, and Mrs V. Peck, second. Three other competitions were very well supported. Winners were: Cured Skin, Baby Lambert, Iced Cake, Mrs J. J. Pryor, Pedigree Cockerell, Brs Bowering of Whakatane.

The trading stall displayed a good variety of goods, and was well patronised.

The day’s competition winners were: Vegetable: Mrs Dunning 1, Mrs Armstrong 2, Mrs Lockyer 3. Single flower: Mrs Armstrong 1, Mrs Winters 2, Mrs Peck 3. Double flower: Mrs Armstrong 1, Mrs J. Murray 2, Mrs Missen 3. Bowl of autumn decorations: Mrs Armstrong 1, Mrs W. Mayo 2, Mrs Carr 3. Baby’s booties: Mrs Briggs 1, Mrs Missen 2, Mrs O. Campbell 3. Butterfly cakes: Mrs Mackrell 1, Mrs Peck 2, Mrs Missen 3.

Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses. The birthday cake, beautifully iced and decorated by Mrs Armstrong, was very much admired, past president, Mrs V. Peck, being asked to do the honours of cutting it.
